Join the Conversation: How to present an illustrators portfolio.

In the Forum:

Recently on the Blue Dingo Promotional Network member and co-creator Danielle Bagshaw asked:

Would love to hear some tips and advice about how to present an illustrators portfolio and the best way to approach publishers with your work.

Anthony Puttee of The Book Cover Cafe shares this advice:

An online portfolio is absolutely the only way to go. Have a great looking
WordPress website that…

  • Showcases your work cleanly and professionally
  • Evidence that you understand the importance of communication (I value this
    myself with contractors)
  • Good information about you, your experience and passion
  • Testimonials – something that creative’s overlook constantly. You can’t
afford to be shy and those who you’ve worked with and had a pleasant experience
working with, will be happy to write a line or two for you. Just follow up
previous clients with a “Hi, how are things-insert polite request for
testimonial here”. Make sure you have one or two placed strategically on your
    home page.
  • Have your official domain name. It’s professional and is better for Search
Engine optimisation (SEO) Do it right the first time and spend a measly $7 to get
    your domain. Example: “DanielleBagshaw.com”.
  • Don’t get a crappy free WordPress theme. If you can’t afford to get a
professional design get a decent premium theme for this professional showcase
site of yours. Message me for more info on this and I’ll happily steer you in
    the right direction.

All the best, if you have any further questions don’t hesitate to ask :)
